Hi guys,

Glad to see you added this forum section. I have been looking for a video camera under 500 bucks. What do you recommend?

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the kudos. We are so heavy into video production and producing the new JustNorth DVDs, that I thought it be helpful to share are experience in the forums.

If your are on a budget, for a camcorder, I would look into the Panasonic PVGS180 or a Canon ZR500. You should be able to find both, on the net, for around $300.00. Those would be my recommendations.

Let us know what you end up buying?

I was just informed that at CES today, Canon introduced the new replacements for th ZR series of entry level camcorders.

Notably, the ZR500 is being replaced by the ZR800 - but thankfully, the replacement will still have the microphone input. Price is expected to be $280.

The higher end models in the ZR line will not have the microphone input.

Hi DominoJoe,

I just went out to the article that Buck recommended. The Cannon ZR does a great job. If your are looking for a camera, on the cheap, that also does a good job, RCA just announced a new model - with a flip out monitor, and user replaceable SD cards (which means very large storage capabilities).

The suggested price will be $130.

Just an update, Joe, if you are still shopping:

Casio EXILM EXZ700 at about $207 is a very good buy.
The main feature I liked about that camera was that it had an extra bright display and it had the anti-shake feature. The one thing I didn't like was that the highest ISO was 400.

The Canon Powershot SD600 is the #1 seller on Amazon and you can get it at about $213. It doesn't have the anti-shake feature, but it does go to ISO 800.

If you really want to shoot a lot indoors, without a flash, the FujuiFilm F30 has a max ISO of 3200.

In addition to these three camera's, Canon SD450, which is a little lower in price, is worth looking at. So is the Sony VX2000.

Domino Joe,

Ive been in the filming business for many years and ive looked at alot of hunting and filming websites. Ive found one place for all my camera gear. Campbellcameras.com they have all kinds of video cameras like the high def x-hal and standerd def gl2. They also have wireless mikes, rain covers and all sorts of accessories.
