Greetings from the deer woods of Southeast Nebraska.

For almost a month I watched 2 seperate small herds of does and yearlings use the same route every morning that I was in the woods, so this morning I found 'the' spot that would give me a shot at one of those mature does, and sure as could be the deer showed up...."BEHIND ME" at 30 yards on a trail that hadn't had hardly any use this season..............the lead doe had me pegged.....the 2nd in line was a very nice matron doe and was almost clear of a fallen tree so that I could get the sights on her with almost no movement (remember the lead doe is locked up on me like the best bird dog) but I'm holding my own, then a slight breeze and the lead doe bolts taking ten 'tails' with her all waving goobye.

We are in a serious melt now and I don't know if I'll get to the woods again before the end of our late antlerless season Jan. 15th, but even if I do I guess I'll get out the TOPO map and throw a dart and where it lands is where I'll hunt.

Here is a topic for debate I have seen before on many forums......and this is my opinion........tell me what you all think.

Getting a shot at a doe is harder than a buck, sure big bucks go almost all nocturnal except for the rut, they use the more hidden trails, but a wiley mature doe got that big by being smart also.....and they seem so much more nervous and alert in the woods than bucks......I have stared down 1 or 2 bucks in my day and been sucessful at not spooking them but have never done the same with a doe and I swear the only thing I can imagine that I did different was blink.

So for me harvesting a mature doe is as much of a trophy as a mature buck.

I too hunt for food, and when I first started hunting I took my share of 1 1/2 year olds, but now I let them walk which is why I feel I got such a nice deer this year..... 5 years ago I would have shot a young buck just becasue it was opening day and I wanted to be done......now I take vacation that week of the season so I can find the 'right' deer to harvest and not just throw lead at the first thing I see.

I know that 'Buck' posted instructions on how to post a pic., but my girlfriend and I can't seem to get her digital camera to download to her desktop and let us be able to post pics. but we are still working on it, I did send an 8x10 just a paper copy of the same pic. that Buck posted for me on the hunting forum with me and my buck and a few business cards with the meat to pass out if anyone so wishes, so you can at least toast my picture.

As far as the rest of the deer season.................I never thought I'd say this but "we did a good freeze" to harden back up the snow so I can get to the woods, anywhere I could hunt around here is surrounded by crop fields and will just be too muddy if we stay in the current weather pattern.
