I hunt north west alabama, every year for about 2 to 21/2 weeks during mid to late december we go through a period where nobody sees any deer. Does anyone have an idea why or what we can do to see these deer. |

chuckrock23...hey my southern brother after the rut........bucks can stay very close to a food source and try to put back on some body wieght....they get lazy after all there effort.... do you have some sort of seasonal food crop that comes into play....frost kills one crop so they move to another......i live northestern minnesota....any big weather event pushes deer back into some heavy timber until the storm subsides...if the snow is really deep they can actually "yard" there for the remainder of winter depending on avaliable browse... the area that is suddenly void of deer....scan farther, set trail cams, bright moonlight...deer feed all night and lay up for long extended periods...waxing or waning moon during those two weeks???...just some thoughts from a yankee....you find me some quail......i'll come help you with your deer problem...tw |

| I agree 100% - I see it here every year in my yard. My woods is a favorite hang out for "winter deer" - We see them all year long and always do pretty darn good during the hunting season but right now (during winter) it is not uncommon for us to have large groups come in the back yard. I love to watch them when they group up as you will often see them "play" - the deer will chase each other, run in circles, all kinds of fun stuff. If you do happen to come by a large group - set a stand up and watch during a full moon night! |

Hi ChuckRock,
Welcome to the forums.
I think all the deer are in my back yard right now. Barely visible, through the heavy snow that has begun to fall, I see two doe family units down by the lake.
What a great Christmas gift. |

| Thankyou fellas. We plant spring, summer, fall, and winter game plots, so the food source is always there. This year we have not had an acorn crop at all so our plots have been eaten to the ground, but it seems to be only at night. I am hanging my camera tomorrow to try to get a fix on the movement times. We don't see bucks following does until mid to late January, normally. We always considered this the RUT period. I thought that maybe this time of the year they could be stageing getting ready for the rut (or what we call the rut) do you think this is possible? |

chuckrock23 deer patterns can be like a paved road one minute........and a maze the next....you can long term deer by watching them all year...you learn there major travel corridors...then seasonal changes, weather, food sources, predators, can tip a short term detour..if a wolf goes through my back forty...it will screw the deer up for a solid week...a mast crop will have them walking two different routes, one for the fresh acorns, and then where is fresh water....checking tracks daily, your eyes on the same route daily, and a camera watching where you cant, will build a map for you to follow....after a few weeks of journal entries ....look back and see what they have done, after a year compare it...it will be like the back of your hand after twleve months...with some small adjustments of course .....tw |
