randyman, there are so many rod choices out their. I want to set my kids and myself up for some good walleye rods and reels. my kids are 7 and 10.

we have fished sunfish and now they want to try walleye fishing. With all the rod sizes and materials available i am quite confused as to what to get and how much to spend.

DominoJoe - This is a wonderful question and not an easy one to answer because there are so many opinions out on whats the best. I will do my best to help you.

First - take a look at what you are currentl using - Do the kids use a close face reel? Many close face reels work fine as a starter Walleye rig. I myself landed lots of Walleye and Northern on my first reel ( a Zebco 33 ) If you are planning on changing the kids over to an open face reel then I would suggest doing this now and try pan fishing first as they know how to fish for them. Learning a new reel may take some time. Maybe even spend some time casting along a shore to get the how to down before you step into a boat.

Rods are also a big part of the question and here there are lots of opinions. So I will share my feelings and I hope others will step in and share thier thoughts as well. I Walleye fish with a 7 foot light action rod. For me its the best length and action.

As far how much to spend - The fact is fish do not care how much the rod and reel you are using cost! I look for quality - for me - I prefer Shimano symetre reels and Fenwick eagle rods.

In a word " YES " these rods are worth the money because of quality! I am not to sure that fish can tell what kind of rod and reel you are using - but at the end of a 8 hour fishing trip you can!

To put it anouther way - any sport you are involved with it is a good idea to purchase the best equpment you can.

I own a large number of rod and reel combos and have put LOTS of hours behind all of them. Top end equpment ( like G Lomis and St. Croix ) provide you with better feel, balance and help to increase your catch.
