Great, just what our waters needed, another invasive species. According to the Forum, a Fargo newspaper, a snail called The New Zealand Mudsnail has been found in the Duluth-Superior Harbor and the St. Louis River estuary. Apparantly these little buggers can't live in the cold waters of Lake Superior, but the harbors, estuaries are just fine for them. I imagine the rivers would also be warm enough, as would the lakes. From the report, they are tiny little things, only the size of a peppercorn as adults, but they "clone" themselves and can produce at a high rate. They state that one snail and its offspring can produce hundreds of thousands of clones each year. They advise boaters to clean all vegitation from boats, moters, trailers and fishing gear and to rinse waders, hip boots and such with hot water or let them dry for several days in the sun to kill the snails. They think these came in by ship via ballast water. Does anyone know anything about these latest invaders? What do they look like, ect? The picture in the paper doesn't help much... Thanks for any reply and the great website to ask the question.. Wade Morris wmorris37@gmail.com |
