hogeye,
I am deer hunting a new area this year and it will be my first time hunting with a new hunting party. I am fairly new to deer hunting and want to make a good impression. Can you give me any tips on how to pattern a new hunting area and what is proper deer hunting etiquette with this new group? |

Buckman,
I am assuming that you are gun hunting since you stated that you are party hunting. Based on this assumption, I will respond accordingly.
Patterning deer during gun season is possible, but it is rather a thing of predicting their escape routes and behavioral modifications in response to the hunting pressure as apposed to their patterns in a more natural less stressed setting.
For starters, I find that it can be beneficial to stay in the woods well after everyone is gone as well as getting to your stand well before others enter your area. Other hunters will many times push the deer in your direction on their way in and out. This especially holds true for public areas. When it is bitterly cold, bring a sleeping bag into your stand and pull it up to you chest level. This has enabled me to sit all day in frigid temps.
If the rut is on I like to sit near the the thickest stuff possible or near safe areas in which many times the does will be holding. Mr. buck is sure to be near by.
After the first weekend, I would say spend a few days in the woods when most other hunters are at work. The deer may begin to relax a bit. If it is a really wet year, natural funnels or islands within wetlands can be good areas. During dry years the deer won't use the same funnels and the old wet areas will become sheltered safe havens. This is when a high stand is nice. It will allow one to "poke" the deer with the bullet when they are feeling safe in the swamp. Remember there are height requirements for permanent stands in many states though.
As far as etiquette, it is always good to bring a crock pot full of something good as well as something good to wash it down with. I have found that a Grainbelt Premium works good for this. Just save the Grainbelts or any other adult beverage for after the hunt. Also it is good to put in your own time scouting. This can be easily accomplished from you computer viewing aerial photos on site like terraserver.com as well as purchasing a county plat book. It doesn't hurt to help drag and cut deer as well.
