A Deer's Attention Span
It has been proven that a deer has an attention span of about 3 minutes. If you have made a mistake, and you can hold your composure and be silent, all may not be lost. The deer may resume his natural activities.

Buy a box of rubber gloves.
I always keep a supply of rubber gloves handy. Whether it is for gutting a deer or just filling up the truck with gas (scent control) they are sure handy during hunting season.

Cheap deer scent burner that works
Make your own sent burner out of a pop can. Cut pop can in half clean the paint off can make 3 air holes near the bottom use a scent free candel. Put the bottom part of the can on the top half, add scent and let it burn. It will bring in the bucks if u use doe inestrous scent and u can also use food atractant sents as well. Anthing heated by a flame smells twice as strong. Also, the wind will carry the sent farther with in 15 seconds u will see the scent start to rise up.

Cheap Masking Scent
A cheap masking scent can be made from a solution of warm water and baking soda. You can also wash your clothes in baking soda to eliminate odors. The baking soda also makes a good powder for checking wind direction.

Don't Pack Away That Fishing Gear
Just because it's hunting season doesn't mean you should pack all your fishing gear away. A fishing creel packed with deer tracking equipment: (batteries, survival kit, first aid kit, etc...) makes an excellent tote bag for all those needed items.

Hiding Your Scent
When you're behind on your scouting and have but a few days before the hunt, try dragging a cover scent behind you while you search the area. Obviously this will not destroy the human scent but it will suppress it... possibly keeping that buck in the area for you to hunt.

Hydrogen Peroxide
A spray bottle filled with Hydrogen Peroxide is a good tool to have when tracking a wounded deer. When the blood gets sparse or to determine if it is actually blood you're looking at, spray the Peroxide in the area in question. The Proxide will foam up as it reacts with the blood leaving no doubt if you are on the right path to finding your deer. It also doubles as a cleansing agent for wounds you may encounter in the field.

Quite snack time in the deer woods.
Avoid bringing noisy packaging material into the deer woods. Open and store food in a zip-lock bag before leaving camp. Don't want the buck of a lifetime getting away due to a noisy candybar wrapper.

Road Hunting
This is not so much of a tip, but a question for you to seek an answer for... thus, it will become a tip for many Minnesota hunters. The question is this: while road hunting for pheasants, I am confused of the regulations and descriptions for when and where I can arm my firearm and shoot at a pheasant. Does the law state that I can shoot from a road but not across the road? Or does it state that the road continues into the ditch for a certain distance (such as 10 feet, etc.)? What exactly are the regulations for shooting or not shooting from a road?
Thanks,
Donnie

Safe Tree Hunting
If you are going to bowhunt or gunhunt out of a tree, make sure you are always tied to the tree going up or down. I use a safety line with a prussik knot that can save my life anytime. If you'd like instructions on how to set this up, send me your email address and I'll send you the info free. Safe hunting, Jim safetreehunt@yahoo.com

Shooting From A Tree Stand
Practice shooting from an elevated position, preferably sitting down. Many people climb their stands and miss or worse yet wound a deer, only to find out they shoot different from the elevated and sitting position.

stand movement
If you leave your stand up during the off season you can tie a old wash cloth or something of the sort to your stand. that way the deer get used to the movement and eventually dont bother even looking up..

Stop That Deer
Many times a hunter can stop a moving deer by using a deer call or a short sharp whistle. This could provide the hunter the needed time to get the shot off.

Tree Stand Maintenance
Try to put your treestand in a tree with plenty of background cover, keep the prevailing winds for that time of the year to your face, and take care of those pesky noises your stand may have developed while sitting in the shed. A good treestand lube can be made by heating petroleum jelly until it reaches a liquid form. Some hunters have reported success by including a cover scent in this mixture before applying it to their stands.
