Minnesota deer hunters are being asked this fall to keep a sharp eye out not just for deer, but wild turkeys as well. Some 18,000 deer hunters will be randomly selected to receive a postcard survey asking them to report information about wild turkey sightings while hunting, according to Sharon Goetz, Department of Natural Resources wild turkey biologist at the Madelia Farmland Wildlife and Populations Research Station...

Anglers who visit Leech Lake this winter should see signs of the walleye population's recovery. The Department of Natural Resources reports that young walleye and yellow perch populations are abundant. This information is based on summer and late fall test nettings that suggest the 2006 walleye year class may be comparable to the 2005 year class, which produced the fourth-highest trawl catch rate on record. Strong back-to-back year classes bode well for the fishery, according to DNR Northwest Region Fisheries Manager Henry Drewes...
