I'm a thankful and appreciative kind of guy. I've always tried to see Lake Sakakawea, for instance, as the glass that’s still half full. For some, hunting might imply getting a shot and I've even heard at times people suggest that unless you bring something home, how do you prove you were hunting? I'll save the argument of what constitutes success for another day. My point is, our Sunday afternoon strolls are hunting, and we need to adhere to...

It's December, and if there's a transition time for outdoor activities, this is it. Deer gun season has closed, and while muzzleloader deer and many upland game seasons are winding down, another season has opened. 2001 marked the opening of managed spearing in 30 North Dakota waters...

Lakes and reservoirs in North Dakota are like a trusty shotgun - when you find one you like, it stands to reason you'll make every effort to keep it working as long as possible. But you also understand there may come a time when the gun just might not perform like it did in its prime...

About 15 years ago I attended my first Game and Fish Department advisory board meeting. I was a fisheries and wildlife management student at North Dakota State University, and had a goal of one day working in the natural resource field. I decided it might be a positive learning experience to attend this open public meeting, and it sounded like more fun than studying for a statistics exam...

While North Dakota has high deer numbers compared to historical levels, when you hear comments about - all the deer - that’s not the case everywhere. Realistically, in much of the eastern half of the state, white-tailed deer numbers are still above population objectives...
